"The Modern Cottage"
Dwell completed and sold this dynamic project in Spring 2007. These three single family homes sit in a residential neighborhood within walking distance of the urban amenities of downtown Columbia City. The Sound Transit Columbia City/Edmunds Street station that is just a 1/2 block west.
The previous owner of the home at 3216 Edmunds lovingly restored the home including era-specific appliances and finishes from the turn of the century. The house is designated on the Columbia City historic walk. When it came time to move, he turned down many offers from developers before Dwell Development made a commitment to preserve the existing house as part of the development project. This presented a challenge to our design team.
We created a dialogue between the new homes and the existing home. The massing clearly reflects homes built in the era of the original home. Siding is contemporary and durable with details that are complementary to the existing home. The interiors are very modern, open and filled with light. The pitched roofs created tall and dynamic upper floors on both of the new units.
